AV Recommendations

I've been looking around on the web during the last 4 days or so for
the best AV for the network at the company I work for. It consists of
60 workstations running Win95, 98, 2000 Pro and XP Pro, 3 Windows File
Servers, all running Windows 2000 and one Linux Server running Redhat.

Ive looked at many AV's, Mcafee, Norton, AVG, Kaspersky, Zonealarm
NOD32 etc etc. I've narrowed it down to choose between NOD32, AVG and
Mcafee (just because a co worker insists). I've ran the trials for both
AVG and NOD32 and NOD32 seems to be the best till now. What I think is
the decisive factor is the functionality of the Remote Administration
programs on both of those programs. If someone can help me decide by
giving me some insight on those programs and also help me out on
convincing my co worker that Mcafee isn't worth the money I would be
thankful.

I'm a fan of NOD32. I'm not familiar with their enterprise version but
it may meet your needs. I would also look at Sophos and NAV Enterprise
Edition.

thanks for that info Ron, quite helpful..... im dissapointed by NOD's
results, I really thought it would be much better on the on demand
results, however, cant beat the proactive test, NOD kicks ass there

Im also a fan of NOD and ive used it forever on my home PC however, my
co worker here insists on getting mcafee and stupid people at eset dont
answer so i dont even know the price for the 70 licenses were looking
for

also.... anyone have any links or info regarding the system memory an
process cycles that the AV consumes, basically how much resources it
takes up..... thats one of the main reasons i like NOD but if i could
get it on document it would be awesome.... ill also look around but the
help would be appreciated

And, I would love to know how Nod compares to Avast in regard to the use
of system resources, if anyone has info on that it would be much
appreciated.

My trial subscription to Avast is coming to an end and I have to decide.

What trial subscription? You simply need to re-register for another 14
months of service. No cost involved.

My work computer uses Symantec Corporate Edition 9.0 antivirus which
gets its updates pushed down to it from a central server. The current
running processes visible in Task Manager are:
DefWatch 2120K
LxrJD31s 960K (new process)
SavRoam 3904K
Rtvscan 19,152K
devldr32 2544K
VPTray 3904K

These are the ones I recognize belonging to SAV. There may be more.
 
Just thought I would post here some simple results I found running both
AV's (NOD32 and McAfee) under the same system.
McAfee Version 8.0.0:
Space on HDD: 36.3 MB
Memory Usage: 25 MB aprox
Time for Complete Scan to take place: 00:41:52
CPU Usage during scan: 90% aprox.

NOD32 Version 2.50.19
Space on HDD: 25 MB
Memory Usage: 15 MB
Time for Complete Scan to take place: 00:12:45
CPU Usage During Scan: 40-50%

just some rough comparisons.....

I would think a subjective evaluation of how much "drag" a utility
places on your other applications might be more meaningful. Does it
really matter how many MBs of memory both use, if you can't notice a
difference?

If you require on access protection and for some reason think that
protection from "yet to be identified" variants of popular malware is
important, then you might want to gravitate toward NOD. Otherwise, it
makes little difference when it comes to ITW malware.

Scanning files
Processor usage:
average = 46.50%
maximum = 100.0%
minimum = approx 26.0%

Scanning a downloading .jpg file:
maximum CPU usage = 60.16% for about two seconds.
