My daughter has been given a Mac. It has no AV on it.

I've read through lots of sites as to whether AV is neccessary and some say yes and some say no. On balance, and in the more recent comments, it seems to be the concensus that it is wise to install AV.

Just wondered if anyone out there uses a Mac, and if so, do you have AV on it and, if so, which one?

Mac users or Apple in general will haveyou believe that their systems are free from viruses etc, but that is far from the truth.
I have a Mac Pro and have had it for around 2 years without any sort of AV on it. The start of the year I started using Kaspersky as it was a product I had used on Windows based PC's in the past.
Gone are the days when Mac's didn't get viruses and malware etc. No OS is completely virus free.

No OS is completely virus free.

Completely vs. practically...

Nice one Mr Mucks, our Linux user friends labour under a false sense of security ;)

All these posts, mine included, and only recommendation nivrip has is ED giving a thumbs up for Kaspersky. Which, I understand, costs money. Any freebie AV for Macs available?

As for Linux and AV, I've never used AV software with Linux, have to confess, and I've just installed Linux Mint V13 KDE 64 Bit, finally changed from V12.

In fact, dare I say it, but stay away from iffy sites - primarily porn and warez - and with some common sense and a fair understanding, you don't really need AV software on Windows.

Mebbe ;)

Having checked out lots of sites it seems that one of the most recommended freebies for Macs is Sophos so that is now sitting on daughter's free gift.

Must say that the picture on this particular Mac is superb and some of the other features are too. Mind you, they should be - it cost over £1k when new.
