AV blocking emails

Running the free version of AVAST, I sometimes had problems sending or
checking emails - especially emails with attachments, and suspected AVAST
because switching it off solved the problem.

I've currently switched to the free version of AVG and it is worse; normally
it works fine but occassionally, it seems to act like a firewall and my
email client can't get through. When this happens, disabling the email
scanner component of AVG is an immediate fix. I'm on DSL and have the
connection type set to LAN. Any ideas??

Yup, read the Avast instructions.
I have been using Avast for years at home and at work, very happy with
it.

But you are also happy with posting halfwit replies here . . . so it doesn't
really count for much.

I've used free AVG and Avast for . . . must be over 6 years - and AFAIK
they've never let me down. I don't like Norton or McAffee.
What do you call a real program??

Scanning email is not really necessary if you use an 'on access' scanner AKA
"active scanning", "background scanning" among others. It means basically
that you use other than a more simple approach of 'on demand' scanning.

Worse than that, it tends to cause problems as you've noted.

Use the immediate fix as the permanent fix.

OK. I'm happy with that. It does mean the AVG icon in the taskbar loses its
colour, but I think I can live with that.

Just make sure you actually have 'on access' scanning capability working.
Use the EICAR test file to check it out.

I've tried. I've downloaded it but can't manage to send it (to myself) with
the .com extension - even with all the AVG components I can find switched
off. It sends OK with a txt extension . . . so I guess on access is working
OK.
 
That saying should be "You get no more than you pay for."

It's still not very accurate.

I would assume so too. There is a place on the web that will generate a send
to you with your choice of extension as well as archived and multi-archived
versions (maybe only zip and double-zip - but that is sufficient IMO).
