AV and Firewall apps

Can someone provide a list of which AV and Firewall apps work with Vista
5728?

I read the post concerning AVG Free needing to be installed using
Compatability mode but was curious what else may be available. I always
preffered Zone Alarm but when I attempt to install v 6.5.722 I get the error
message this product has issues with Windows Vista.

TIA,

Kuane

I can't give a complete list but AVAST Home Edition (free) Build 4.7.892 is
working like a charm here with Vista Build RC1 (5728) in both 32-bit and
64-bit modes.

I'm beginning to wonder why I ever paid for an anti-virus program ;)

I just got an email invitation from Symantec this morning to download a
supposedly Vista-compatible version of Norton Internet Security but it is
32-bit only. Pfft! (lol)
They are also due to release, "any day real soon now" a 32-bit bit Vista
version of Norton Anti-Virus for testing.

And,
No need for a 3rd party firewall in Vista.
unlike XP- MSFT did their homework on firewalls for Vista.
To get past the dumbed down GUI just go to start>in the search bar-type
in firewall;and choose -firewall with advanced settings

I would gladly pay for anyone's antivirus before I would take
Norton/Symantec "ANYTHING" for free.

Yeah, sure, and go get a diploma or 2 in network security just so you
understand half the words in that panel. The firewall needs to be easily
configurable for Joe-6-packs or it's useless.
Most AV work in Vista, mercifully not Symanthec's though. Unfortunately UAP
and Defender get in the way, so they need to go.

Cyanna,
Waste your money if you want to.
Even the basic Vista firewall settings are secure.

Avast works and is free. AVG's trial works, is slicker than Avast but only 1
month free. trend Micro OC-cillin works but gums up the machine something
cronic at startup. Norton NO! They just ended my XP 1 year subscription after
200 days - reason "You have re-installed it too often" Grr! Colin

No need to waiste any money, Jeff. There are very good firewalls available
for free. There will be for Vista also.
And no firewall is good unless outgoing connections can be monitored and
configured. The basic Vista firewall doesn't do that.

The basic Vista firewall can be made to do that. It is the first 2-way
firewall supplied by Microsoft.

Re: monitoring outbound packets:

Richard:

How does Vista do that?
By monitoring I mean display a notice, not merely blocking the packets by a
filter rule.

Also, note that MS has supplied ISA (a very extensive 2-way firewall-proxy
product) for some time.

TIA

Richard,

The firewall with advanced features is a very nice tool for IT pros. It is
utterly useless to an average home user due to
1. It's complexity
2. The fact that it doesn't communicate with the user. All outbound
communications are allowed by default. If the user is not notified when some
app want's access to the network/internet, how would they know to block/allow
it. That's why Zone Alarm is so popular. No need to "configure" anything.
Just answer no or yes when a program wants access to external resources and
put a checkmark if the permission is to be permanent. If one changes their
minds, a list with approved programs is at hand with radio buttons for
Allow/Deny/Ask. The settings are per user. Something like that combined with
UAC would really be a powerfull firewall solution.

Cyanna;
Ya really kill me.
Hmm, I wonder what that window that says" block/unblock" means?
Or;what does"Allow a program through Windows Firewall." ; in the control
panel;and on the basic firewall settings;mean?
And; what do I do when that windows firewall settings box;with tabs that
say;"Add program;Add port" pops up?
Or even better; what does that box with a sentence next to it;that says;
"Notify me when Windows Firewall blocks a new program." do?
I wonder?
LOL
Again; it's your money.
Really, are you actually looking at the Vista firewall?

Jeff,

If you have ever seen a message to the user from ANY MS firewall asking him
if the program should be blocked or unblocked, please post a screen shot.
Please remember the discussion concerns OUTGOING connections.
If Joe-6-packs needs to get into the control panel and then Windows
firewall, and then exceptions and then browse for the program and then change
scope and possibly then manually open ports for that program.....Joe will
shut the firewall off, believe me.

"Or even better; what does that box with a sentence next to it;that says;
"Notify me when Windows Firewall blocks a new program." do?"
That's an easy one: nothing, nada, zero, ziltch.
I have more for you: just installed Skype and didn't do anything to the
firewall settings. Guess what? I can both call and receive calls. Just like
that. This is an app that allows file transfers to and from the HDD! I added
Skype to the exceptions list and then UNCHECKED it. And it still works. Both
ways. No warnings it's trying to access the internet or anything.

re: outbound connections

Jeff:

Build 5728 has a setting for "“Display notifications to the user when a
program is blocked from receiving inbound connectionsâ€"

Do you see a similar setting for outbound connections?

TIA

I saw just that notification when I installed MSN Messenger 7.5. It wanted
to connect to the internet, block - unblock!

Richard,
Thanks,
I give up on this thread though;
If people want to spend money on 3rd party apps with no need to now; more
power to them.
It's their money. LOL
Vista's firewall is a MAJOR improvement over xp's; as you and I both know.
Again; it's their money; not mine!!

Re: Vista notifying user for an outbound connection attempt via a new app.

Richard:

Very interesting.

I have installed all of the following Internet using apps and none have
generated a notice:
Acrobat, MS Baseline Security Analyzer, Office 2003, Avast, Firefox,
AtomTime, and IP2.

I have also created a firewall filter rule blocking ping.exe and still no
notification.

I have reviewed all (?) of the firewall settings and only find a setting for
displaying a notice for inbound connection attempts.

One answer is that there is a setting outside of the firewall.

Also, the dialog you saw allowed you to make a choice, apparently the
firewall notification for blocked inbound is to inform you of the block
period (no choice).

The Windows firewall (with advanced security) does not notify you of
outbound connection attempts, only inbound ones. This is a shortcoming when
compared to, say ZoneAlarm, which does notify the user when an application
tries to call out.

Jane:

I know of Richard Urban from the Windows XP NG, and if he says he saw a
notification dialog, I would not be quick to dismiss his comment.

It is possible that what Richard saw was due to a setting outside of the
Vista firewall.
