I get a failure report everytime I try to run updates thru autoupdate.
When I download the file and run it it locally it works.
I only have about 800 meg free disk space on system drive , would that cause
it? I am logged in as domain admin on a DC

any ideas welcome

Yes, very likely. The update process creates a number of update files,
which it does not delete (just in case you need them again.) These are
the files used by the update process to replace the old files with new
ones. The update process also archives the old files, just in case you
want to back out to the pre-update state. These two types of files take
up a lot of space.

a) quick solution: delete all update files and archives - they are no
longer needed. If you feel you might need them again, burn them to a CD
or DVD first, then delete them. Also, run Clean Disk regularly, about
once a week, to get rid of leftover temporary files.

b) better solution: make a backup of all more or less outdated data
files, including the update files and archive files (burn them to CD or
DVD), and then delete them. Also uninstall all rarely used or no longer
used software - that stuff really eats up space.

c) best solution: do b), and get another HD (they're getting very, very
cheap), and use it for data. Just move all your data folders to it, and
set your software to store data on it. Then copy/move all your data
files to the new HD. You need at least 4GB for a system partition, 5 to
10GB is better. If you have a small HD, then you may not have enough
room for the system, the apps, and the data. Hence my suggestion that
you buy a second HD.

Defrag C: regularly, too.
