1.When I run FILE/CHECK FOR UPDATES,
I get Could not connect to internet.
But it appears from this info that I am up to date.
I do have it set to autoupdate.

Microsoft AntiSpyware Version: 1.0.615
This version expires on: 12/31/2005
Spyware Definition Version: 5763 (9/29/2005 10:55:16 PM)

Norton Internet Security FIREWALL ON.
Windows XP Pro FIREWALL OFF.

2. Internet agent status shows inactive, but when I click
activate nothing happens.

Try these two solutions:

1) do an update install--control panel, add or remove
programs, Microsoft
Antispyware, change, update.

Then, try these steps:

1) Open up a command prompt (start -> run -> type in ->
command)
2) Type in the following "regsvr32 msvbvm60.dll" (without
the quotes).
3) Close and re-open Windows AntiSpyware

You can go ahead and do both of these--neither has any
downside risk--and see if that does the job. Let us know
whether it does, or not!

Sometimes, you have to try 2 o 3 times with MSAS, in
order to stick the selection, try.

Please report back your results.

I did both of these.

It solved the problem 2. below, internet agent status.

However, when I run FILE/CHECK FOR UPDATES, I still get
"Could not connect to internet".

Even after running change from control panel and updating,
under Help/About... it says

Microsoft AntiSpyware Version: 1.0.615
This version expires on: 12/31/2005
Spyware Definition Version: 5763 (9/29/2005 10:55:16 PM)

I.E. same as below.

Hello Rougefriar;

Is your Internet Explorer or Outlook Express set to work
off-line or on-line? Please check in the File menu of
Internet Exporer or Outlook Express - the "Work off-line"
option should nºt be checked. Do you have a software or
hardware firewall that controls outbound connections?Let
us know how it works out.

In Norton's NIS make sure your Firewall is configured to allow internet
access for all Programs starting with Giant_ or Microsoft AntiSpyware have
"Permit All" access to the Internet. My Webroot Spysweeper at least
wouldn't run with just "Automatic" access per Webroot support staff, so I
made sure that MSAS had it as well for updates. You might try that.

Make certain to allow full access to microsoft.com in
Norton.

Did you recently update from XP SP1 to XP SP2? If so,
then this could be a part of your problem. You might
want to think about using a better firewall though. When
I updated from Windows Me to XP, even uninstalling Norton
and reinstalling it didn't help with accessing the
Internet. I then bought ZoneAlarm Pro and it solved all
of the access problems.

In the past, Norton was the best out there. That isn't
the case anymore.
