Autotext without trailing space?

Is there a way to prevent Autotext from automatically inserting a spac
at the end so I don't have to backspace when I add a plural ending?

With almost all of my Autotext entries, when I call them up with F3 o
the Enter key, if I want to add "s" (or whatever) to make it plural,
space is automatically inserted between the word and the "s".

I have taken great care NOT to include any trailing space when I creat
new autotext entries since I discovered this problem, but I just can'
seem to get around it. Even if I embed the word entirely within othe
letters when I select it and make it into a new autotext entry, th
problem STILL occurs. Even if I modify it with VBA, such a
"NormalTemplate.AutoTextEntries("blwh").Value = "Black Whitestart" " i
still happens.

AND YET there are a few words in my autotext that DON'T add the space
such as occ" for "occasional", which I think I added sometime. O
course, there are not too many occasions when I want to writ
"occasionals" !

I'm using Word97

The only workaround I can think of is to have different AutoText shortcuts
for plural version of the entries.

Thanks for the idea, Graham. I tried using AutoCorrect instead of
AutoText but it seems it still has the same problem. Namely, a space is
automatically inserted when you type an "s". Ironically, it seems the
best approach may be to INCLUDE the trailing space in my AutoText
entries so I'll at least see that I have to backspace in order to
insert the "s", instead of having the intervening space emerge after I
already typed the "s".

I got some good tips and such from your site.

Thanks,
Steve Sanford

The point of the link was to show the use of alternative punctuation
characters to activate the autocorrect. Thus
if you use tst; as a prompt for an autotext the autotext activates when you
press the ';' and not when you press space. You thus get the text completed
without the space.

Or, and I suspect this works better in AutoCorrect than AutoText, create
different entries for plurals--e.g., amrn=american, amrns=americans. You
can select, edit, and add an existing AutoCorrect entry rather than
re-entering from scratch, and while it's a small hassle the first time, it's
way less of a hassle than deleting numerous spaces, particularly if you type
faster than AutoCorrect.

Graham,

Thanks for getting back on your idea. I DID indeed miss the point th
first time. I tried it again (using ` as the triggering characte
brcause it's so handy and I'm a somewhat slow non-touch typer anyway)

It works like a charm! I'm not sure why, but it works.

I want this because I write about birds a lot and constantly typin
things like Black-throated Green Warbler and White-throated Sparrow i
a real pain.

Now all I have to do is transfer about one thousand bird names fro
autotext to autocorrect with the appropriate modifications! (Actually
think I can figure out a way to do this with VBA)

Thanks,
