I created a CD that I want to boot with. I thought that all you need to do
is create an autorun.inf file, with the file to load pointed to. It did'nt
work. Do you know what I did wrong?

Autorun is to allow the functioning operating system to load the program
stored on the CD, not to be able to boot the CD.

You need to Google on "creating a boot CD" where you will find enormous
amounts of information on how to do this.

If you really mean "boot", then you need to put an operating system on the
CD. Not easy.

If instead you meant "autostart", then you need to set a configuration
option in your system to autostart CDs. It's easy, but not for me - I
turned it off so long ago that I don't remember where it is :-)

Possibly right click on the drive icon and open Properties.

You're so confused. Did you intend to "boot" off CD similar to
booting off a media containing Operating System (e.g. Windows or
command.com).
It doesn't help to alleviate that confusion by erroneously conflating an
operating system with a command interpreter. (-:
