autopreview safe from viruses

I've looked online for the anwer to this question and found conflicting reports. I'm hoping the experts here can set me straight. Is using autopreview safe in that it does not automatically open messages? A while back there was a virus that launched itself from the preview. I turned off all preview options when I learned of this. Today I'm having a dispute with our network dude, he thinks autopreview is safe, but I'm not so sure. I'd like to clear this up once and for all. Also, if any one knows of a Microsoft site with the official answer, I'd be appreciative if you'd pass that URL along. Thanks much!

AutoPreview is save to be used as it is not possible to launch scripts from
there or to execute attachments.
