my son has been down loading and burning some music. ever since he did that i
keep getting a pop up bos that has "autoplay with a flashlight that appears
to be looking for a file" it has a cancel button and even though i click on
that it still keeps appearing. what is this and how can i make it stop?

Does the popup only appear when you insert a disc in an optical drive (CD, DVD) or
when you insert a USB memory stick, or does it occur at other times without
inserting any media? IOW, when do you see this popup?

If it occurs all the time regardless of media insertion, you may have an
Autoplay.inf file in the root of your C: drive.

First, set Windows Folder Options to Show All Files:

Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
Double-click on the My Computer icon.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
After the new window appears select the View tab.
Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show
hidden files and folders.
Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file
types.
Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system
files.
Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

Now open My Computer or Windows Explorer to the root of the C: drive, look for a
file named Autorun.inf....if found, rename it to autorun.old, or delete it.

If the issue occurs on another volume than the C: drive, look for the file in the
root of the affected volume instead.

When done, reset your Folder Options to what they were, or at least for safety's
sake add back the checkmark for the checkbox labeled "Hide protected operating
system files".

Glen,

It does pop up all the time, just not when I am going to play a CD. I tried
all that you said to do for all my drive and did a search for both
autorun.inf and autoplay.inf as\nd I was unable to find a file named that on
any of my hard drives. I even did a wild card .inf and still couldn't find
any thing. Maybe it was something I did, but It said it did a search of all
hidden files also. do you have anyother suggestions.

Thanks

Jim

If you did a wildcard search for *.inf and didn't find anything on your hard drives,
you are doing something wrong, as there are a number of .inf files in the
Windows\Inf folder. Is that what you are stating....there were no results for a
wildcard *.inf search of the hard drives?

Glen,

Sorry about the confusion. I found plenty of inf files but I did not find
any associated to autoplay or autorun.

Thanks

Jim

My son did some more down loading and burning some music and the problem
returned. I tried running the same program, but it didn't get rid of the
problem. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks

Jim

TweakUI has an item that disables autoplay.
