Autoplay and Autoboot fail

I am using XP Pro.

I have two disks - one the XP install CD and the other an application
install CD.

Both will automatically start on one machine, but not on a second
machine.

What should I look for on the failing machine to make it work for
this? I have used msconfig to compare both and so far see no
differences.

First, the PC has to be able to boot from the CD drive. If it has that
capability, you should be able to configure it in the BIOS setup screen
-- typically through the Boot/Boot Options menu.

First of all, are you SURE you want the system that doesn't
autorun, to do it? Most people making a change would want
to disable the autorun, as it's not only a way an infected
CD could infect your box, but also some modern media (like
audio CDs) may autorun a nice little application that
effectively cripples your system... just "in case" you had
some notion to rip their songs... nevermind if you weren't
going to, you couldn't then do anything similar that's
completely legal, either.

Regardless, if you had Tweakui installed it's on the
"Paranoia" tab, or the manual way to do it is here, just
reverse their directions and put in a "1" instead of a "0".

other application on the system that can, was, used to
disable it already?!

Your points are well made. I am going to dwell on them a bit.
Anyway, I found a solution at

using something called: Windows XP autorun repair wizard

It seems to have worked for both 'auto' failures.

folowed by a long string which enumerates various kinds of units,
e.g., NEC, Pioneer, et al.

Anybody know what that is all about?

I have had TweakUI for a long time and have used it to toggle autorun
back and forth. But this time it did not work. I had to set the key
manually.

YMMV however.

Those are a list of drives which have questionable autorun
compatibility, an exclusion list.

I don't know if they work, MS doesn't know either. Do you
know? That's questionable. For whatever reason they don't
meet the same criteria as other drives, we don't really need
to know why.
