automating sending an email from access form

i have a form setup with a button to save a record, format an email and send
it, however, when i click the button, the email doesn't get sent until i
click the 'Send/Receive' button in Outlook, or i wait for however long until
the next time outlook automatically looks for email. i have my outlook setup
to automatically send when connected, and i am connected, so any ideas will
help.

also would like to get code to check to see if outlook or outlook express is
already open, if it is then just send the email, if it isn't, then open
default mail, send the mail, then close the default mail program.
 
i'm using access and outlook 2000, this website says use for access 97 and
outlook 98, will it still work? is there anything easier?
not sure how to reference class modules, if you need to in 2000 products?,
etc.
