I am not sure if this is possible, however I would like to
stop powerpoint from automatically opening a PPT file as a
show when opened from a web browser. Is this the default
behavior?

Basically, when I click on a *.ppt file from a web
browser, it automatically opens as a show and does not
allow me to edit it. I would like to change the default
behavior so that when I click on a powerpoint presentation
file, it will open in MS Powerpoint in "Edit" mode.

I think my question was not clear. I know how to change
the behavior to determine whether the PPT opens in MS
Powerpoint or inside the browser.

What I need to change is given that I am opening the PPT
presentation in the native app (MS Powerpoint), it is
always opening in SHOW mode and is therefore not editable.

When the PPT presentation is set to use the browser
window, it can be edited. I need to know how to set the
netive app NOT to run the PPT as a show automatically.
 
I have to admit, I'm totally at sea as to what you're doing. Let's start
over.

There is a PowerPoint .PPT or .PPS (which?):

It's on a local or network hard drive, or it's on a web server (which?):

You say you open the file from a web browser. What does that mean exactly?
You click on a link to the PPT/PPS file in an html or other file or you
navigate to it on an intranet or local file system and click/doubleclick it
or ...???
