Automatically enter numpad mode on Treo and Q?

On SmartPhone devices with keyboards like the Treo 700w and the Motorola Q,
how can I automatically switch to number input mode when my custom control
gets the focus?

I know there is code to do something like this for a textbox control, but it
doesn't seem to work for my custom control.
 
Is this possible? How does the textbox do it? Or the phone dialer? There
must be some way to switch the keyboard into phone keypad entry mode.
