My XP Pro computer has begun to automatically try to answer any and all incoming
telephone calls unless I physically unplug the phone line from the modem.

Any ideas of what setting is causing this?

Thanks for your help!

Do you have a Fax program installed configured to respond to incoming calls?

The best thing to do is change this is to open your 'Fax' properties, click
devices, click properties, click receive, and change the answer mode to
manual. Now click OK, OK, and everything should be OK.
Now, when the phone rings, the fax console will pop-up, and ask if you wish
it to answer the call as a fax, click yes or no as appropriate.

Thanks

Would this be causing it to happen even with the system off?

That's probably a setting in your BIOS, there's sometimes a "wake on Lan"
and/or "Wake on modem" option in there.
