I'm periodically notified of new windows updates so that
I can manually elect to download such updates, but
nothing happens when I hit the download button. This was
not always the case...any idea of what is preventing the
computer from downloading these updates?

Hi,

When you say that nothing happens, do you mean that it does not start to
download? Are you downloading anything else when you do this? AU is
configured so that it should not "steal" any bandwidth from other
applications. So, if you are using all your bandwidth, AU will not start to
download until it decides that enough bandwidth is free so that it wont
affect any other application.
And when it has started, it can seem to be very slow, if you are downloading
other things. Again, this is because it will not "steal" bandwidth from
other applications.

If you need to download an update ASAP, i recommed Windows Update and/or
Windows Update Catalog.

There does not appear to be any matching error on the
microsoft site. I don't even seem to register any errors
in my Windows Update txt file (hopefully this is the
equivalent of what you refer to as the windowsupdate.log
file). BTW - I'm running XP. Here is the activity in that
file for today; it doesn't seem to show any problem...

Hi Steve,

Nope, that doesn't show much. Try reinstalling the site controls. To
reinstall the Windows Update site controls, you must first remove the old
controls. The following are generic steps for all versions of Windows, so
not all may apply to your system:

Remove Controls:
1. Click on Start, then Run.
2. Type in 'regsvr32 iuctl.dll /u' (without the quotes) click OK. You should
get a successful message, click OK on that as well.
3. Click on Start/search/files, choose to look in C:\
4. Type in the file name IUCTL.DLL and click Search Now. Delete every copy
of this file that you find.
5. Run the search again for the file IUENGINE.DLL. Again, delete every copy
of this file you find.

Delete Windows Update files:
1. Double-click on My Computer.
2. Open the C drive (or drive housing the system files)
3. Open the Program Files folder
4. Open the Windows Update folder.
5. Delete everything in the folder except the V4 folder.
6. Next, Open the V4 folder, if it exists.
7. Delete everything in the folder except the iuhist.xml file
8. Close Window

Then revisit the WindowsUpdate site and you will be prompted to reinstall
the new V4 site controls.
