Automatic updating of HP printer driver

Having had some trouble to cancel print jobs (Deskjet 1220 & Win XP) I
yesterday evening went to HP website to see if there is a newer driver.

There HP offered a service "Automatically check to see if your driver needs
updating" which I invoked. After some steps I was informed that an update is
available, would I like it to be installed? I said yes, the updater
downloaded some 2 MB (perhaps) worth of files, and a moment later told that
the driver is now up-to-date. I did a small test print to see if things are
OK. They seemed to be, and I went to bed.

Today I noticed something I do not like. I have been very careful that
Windows and all software I run under it uses consistently English in the
user interface. Since yesterday, the printer driver does not: some tabs in
Preferences selection now greet me in Finnish, my native language. The
driver also displays the reason why I want to stick to English: the
translation is bad. For example, the paper type selection now reads "Laatu",
which translates to "Quality" in English. Arghhh!

The updater has made the elementary mistake of deducing the interface
language from my location, istead of determining it from the OS I use or
asking me.

Does anybody know if there is a way to re-update the driver to English
interface, apart from uninstalling it and re-installing from scratch?

Matti, your problem is due to your using inferior relabeled ink. When
you see the error of your ways and confess in public, and then return to
genuine Hewlett-Packard ink, your driver will return to English.

Get down on your knees, clasp your hands, and give thanks to God that
your printer hasn't exploded in rage.

Thanks for your effort. I'm sure you did the best you could.

Many driver installations ask for your preferred language but many do not.
All I can recommend is that you download the latest driver from HP (instead of
using the updater) and hope that it has a language preference selector. If not
it will probably install in your Windows default language.

A sequel to this:

While browsing the web for info about the Deskjet 1220, I came across this
site
http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/SCANNER-Digital-CAMERA-WEBCAM/HP/Hp-deskjet-1220-21.shtml
which offers for download version 2.1 of the DJ 1220 driver, date Dec 7,
2003; size 11 MB. The download does not work, however, because the link
points to a HP page which does not have this driver.

At HP support site the latest available version is 2.0, date Apr 29, 2002,
size 11 MB.

What is going on here? Did HP release 2.1 and later withdrew it? I am pretty
sure I was using 2.0 *before* the automatic update determined that my driver
is not up-to-date.
