Where do I go to configure the updates to my (and
others') XP os? I understand that somewhere I can choose
for the downloads to update automatically, or just prompt
me. Please help. Thank you!

Open Control Panel and select System
On the AutomaticUpdates tab, set it the way you want.
This only works for that machine. You need to do the same with any others.

I tried that approach with absolutely no success. Hopefully someone can help
me solve my problem. Here is the scenario.

I am running WindowsXP Home edition. I am attempting to set my computer up
to automatically download WindowsXP Service Pak 2 when it is released. When
I click on Start/Control Panel/System/Automatic Update all of the
options are grayed out and there is a statement that "The Windows Update
Service is unavailable".

When I go to Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services/Automatic
Update, the Startup Type is set to Automatic and the Service status is set
to Start, which is what it should be.

When I click Start, I get the following error message: "Could not start the
Automatic Update Service on Local Computer. Error 1083: The executable
program that this service is configured to run in does not implement the
service.

1. What does the error message mean?
2. How do I enable automatic update?
