I get these Automatic Updates almost every day now supposedly from
Windows. Is this the norm? Are they really from Microsoft? If so,
why are they taking over my computer? Shouldn't they ask if I want to
install these "updates?"

Please reply in the newsgroups...

I cannot see your screen - I have *no idea* what *you* are seeing by what
you have given as a description so I have no idea what you are seeing, etc.

Please come back describing what you are seeing in as much detail as you
can.

There is a setting for that, right-click my computer and see automatic
updates tab.
If that is set right, and all things being equal you can set it to
download and notify you. At least you'll see what they are about.
If you've install the windows defender application from MS, then this
downloads updates, like anti-virus updates, almost every day. That's
normal.
If nothing else you can go to your start menu and at the top of programs
is the windows update of course and there is a history option there.
If the history says last update was a week ago and yet you think
otherwise then the update is somebody else.
Automatic updates may not always be Windows. It could be other software
like Adobe reader or such updating, but every day?.... hmmmm. Don't
think so. I've got a lot of software that does daily updates and maybe
once a week.

Thank you - this explains what I'm seeing.

Select, Start, Help and Support, Keep your Windows up- to-date with
Windows Update, Review your Update History. You can see there what has
been downloaded.

Windows XP updates are usually once a month on the second Tuesday of the
month. If you're using Microsoft Office post 2000 you will get more on
the same day. If you are using Windows Defender or Windows Live OneCare
you could get updates 2/3 days each week.
