I have been running the Home Edition of Win XP, version 2002, Service
Pack 2 for over a year and have not been downloading the updates as I
get the update reminders. I know, I know....

My question is this.

If I go to the Automatic update function in the system section of the
control pane, am I going to have problems because I have been ignoring
the update reminders????

TIA

No, you should not have any problems. You might have more than a
few updates to mess around with, and some will have to be done in
order, or even by themselves, but the instructions will alert you
nicely.

IMO the best way would be to turn on autoupdate and let it do
them in the background so you don't have to manually fiddle with
them. Then when the updates quit coming, turn it back off if you
wish.

Hi Loring
As long as you remember that during the second half of April, there were
updates which caused problems - search in groups I.E.6_Outlook, general and
basics for starters.
And of course there is that dreaded WGA which was labelled critical but it
was an MS spy to check your OS system to see if it was genuine. This WGA
cannot be removed very easily once downloaded.
See what others say at below:

http://forums.microsoft.com/genuine...7062761920505&ie=toureject?SiteID=25&PageID=1
And of course search the groups, then make up your own mind before blindly
doing anything you may regret.
In addition, under normal circumstances, the current consensus is to keep
autoupdate turned OFF. Use notify only.
In December 2005, the number of updates were between 40-50, depending of
course on what you run on your system

Install SP2 and you'll only have 42 updates to install after that. :)
Best to get the entire SP2 package from here :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en
OR, order the CD. It's free, but you pay a shipping/handling charge :
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

The latest WGA Tool does *not* have to be installed as the EULA
indicates that it's "pre-release software".
Instead have the system Validated here :
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/

The General Tab under system properties lists the following:

Microsoft Windows XP, Home Edition version 2002, Service
Pack 2. You say to install Service pack 2. Doesn't the info on the
General Tab mean I already have SP2, or are you saying install it
again??????

TIA

Sorry for the misinformation, Loring. All I saw was
Microsoft Windows XP, Home Edition version 2002
Suggest you do not do all of the updates at once. That way if any issue
arises from one of them you do not have to uninstall them all to find
the culprit. Do five at a time at most.
For AU to function correctly one needs to have the Automatic Update and
Cryptographic services set to Automatic and BITS set to Manual.

Also, suggest you do the updates for IE(KB912812), OE(KB911567), and WMP
(KB911564,KB911565) separately from the others.

The latest WGA tool is not required, yet. Best method to make sure there
are no WGA issues is to run the Diagnostic Tool :

I still have a couple of questions before I do this. Thank you for
your patience. I do not understand the following instructions.

"For AU to function correctly one needs to have the Automatic Update

I was going to check the "download update for me, but let me choose
when to install them" in the System Properties window. Are you
referring to another location for "Automatic Update and >Cryptographic
services set to Automatic"?

Last but not least what is"Bits set to manual" and where do I access
it?

TIA

Loring

Loring, go to Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, then click on
Services. You will see a long list of the various services that Windows
uses. Scroll down and look for BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer) and
check to see whether it states Manual for startup type.
Automatic Updates should be listed as Automatic, as should Cryptographic
Services.

Jane's give you the proper instructions, Loring. You can also set
Automatic Update to " Notify *before* downloading ... ". Then click on
each one and check out the link provided for further information
regarding each update.
