Automatic updates stays grayed out

While planning for the upcoming release of SP2, I checked Control
Panel/System/Automatic Updates and was surprised to see all the options
grayed out and a message "Windows Update Service is Unavailable." I ran
"services.msc" and verified that Automatic Updates was set to Automatic,
enabled and started. Nonetheless, I stopped the service, then restarted
it. After rebooting, I rechecked Control Panel and saw that my options
were still grayed out. How do I set the options permanently? (I've run
CWShredder, Ad-Aware and Spybot, so my system should be fairly pest-free.)

Hi,

Is this XP Pro or Home? It sounds like a group policy in effect.
