Automatic Updates dwonload icon in taskbar

I have automatic updates turned on & for the last 3 days the icon in my
taskbar is saying downloading updates 0%, this appears to make my computer
very sluggish & my computer won't turn off in the normal way! i.e. it just
gets stuck!! This happened to me when xpsp2 was downloading automatically &
the same thing happened for about 6 days!! I just wondered if this was
normal! Any ideas please? Many thanks.

Turn off autoupdate, and then apply, and turn it back on.
