Hello,

For some reason, the Automatic Update function on my
Windows XP system will not work. That is, I have gone to
the Control Panel and then to System and selected the
Automatic Updates Tab where I have checked the box to
keep my computer up to date, however, Automatic Updates
never runs and I must always manually run Windows
Update.

Any advice as to how I can get Automatic Updates to run?

Thanks,

Gordon

Hi Rich,

Your link, http://www.kellys-korner-
xp.com/win_xp_update.htm, had the info to make Automatic
Update start working. Thanks!

BTW, all I did was disable "Remove access to use all
WIndows Update features", however, it was previously
checked as "not configured" so why did that solve my
problem?

Also, your document says to "Create a new DWORD value
named "NoWindowsUpdate". How does one do that?

Thanks,

Gordon

It was probably configured for the auto or manual by Default.
. Start>Run type: regedit
go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explore
r

To create a Dword value just click on the Explorer folder an then rt click
in the right pane in regedit and select dword
Type in the name NoWindowsUpdate and select 1 for value.

Slightly OT, but still in the area of "Automatic Updates". I have all 4
PC's (WinXP Home) set to automatically check for updates and install them.
Same with Norton Anti-Virus Updates. However, it appears that the concept
of "Automatic Update" used by MS is not my concept. What I find ever so
often is the Update icon in the quick launch area signaling me that I need
to go ahead with the automatic update. I would like to be able to do a
completely automatic update, including the rebooting afterwards. Any ideas
and guidance? I may well have missed something even if I have RTFM.

TIA, YHVMAIA

Hi Rich,

When I created the Dword parameter and assigned a value
of 1 then Windows Update quite working altogether.
Windows Update disappeared from my Programs list so I
went to the Microsoft site and tried to run Windows
Update upon which it said that Window's Update had been
disabled on my system. Then, I deleted the new Dword
value and now everything seems to be working again.
Should I have set the value to 0 instead of 1?

Thanks for your assistance.

Gordon
