Hello All:

All entries in the Automatic Updates pane in my System Properties dialog are
disabled. It is probably a Group Policy setting that's doing it - searched
all through but in vain.

Does anyone know how to enable the settings?

Thanks in advance!

Best regards,
- Rajesh

PS: I have an XPPro with all updates installed.

Even on a stand alone computer, it is best to not have automatic updates.
Often, when you are in the middle of a critical operation it will kick in
and reek havoc on your project.

Check for updates frequently, with automatic updates disabled.

Hello JAX:

Thanks for your reply!

What I meant was that the items for enabling / disabling are GRAYED out in
the Automatic Updates pane of System Properties. I want them UN-GRAYED out
so that I can turn on/off Automatic Update as I wish. (Personally I prefer
to disable Automatic Updates, but that's not the point here.)

Do you know how to un-gray them?

Thanks and best regards,
- Rajesh

Rajesh, you mentioned the possibility of this being a group policy change.
Are you on a computer on a domain?

What OS are you running? Professional or Home Edition?

If you are running XP Pro, you can view your Group Policy Settings by doing
the following:

Click Start | Run
In the Run line, type "gpedit.msc" (w/o the quotes) and press <ENTER>

There are two different areas that have Group Policy listed, here's how to
view them:

Under Computer Configuration, click on the "+" next to Administrative
Templates | System, and select Group Policy
Under user configuration, click on the "+" next to Administrative Templates
| System, and select Group Policy

If you are on a corporate network, I'd highly recommend that you discuss any
changes you wish to make with your network administrator before doing
anything to these settings. If you are on a domain, it's very possible that
any changes you make here will be changed back the next time you log in.

Hello Lance:

Thank you very much for your patient reply.

To answer your questions, I am running XP Pro in a domain. I solved the
issue myself. Somehow my registry settings were configured to use servers
(non-existent as yet) on our intranet to fetch the automatic updates. I
removed these entries (with the network admin's permission, of course) and
now everything is fine. I found the required info in
http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/1241.

Thanks and best regards,
- Rajesh
