I am just woundering if the automatic update will still run and install the
updates if the user is not an administrator. I work at North Shropshire
District Council and we have people with laptops and we want to put windows
defender on the laptops to get rid of and block spyware, but as the users at
the most are only set as power users will windows defender keep upto date
when they use there laptops or will their security access block them?

Does everyone own their own laptop, or are they property of the work? If they
own their computers, they are usually setup as administrators. If these are
company owned, and they are used instead of regular desktops, you can check
with the network administrator of the network. Priveleges can be modified
based on who installed and set up the machines. If you have authority,
through control panels, there might be a folder called Administrative Tools,
which contains a utility called Local Security Settings. This location allows
individual settings to be made, including installation of programs. If you do
not have access to this folder and cannot install, someone with higher
authority to the computers would have to set that up to give permissions if
they wish. Under "Software Restriction Policy", by default its usually an
allowed or disallowed, no middle ground exceptions. Any exceptions would need
to be created by the Administrator or a higher power user. An administrator
or higher level user can go around and install the programs and set them up
if you don't have access to installing or updating. They could always create
a simple batch file that updates them through the network, create a silent
uninstall and update. There is a command "/quiet" that could hide any
changes. If you go to Start-> RUN and type the command "msiexec" you will see
the commands that can be used should it be set for no user interaction on
updates.

If users are currently getting updates via Automatic Update, installing
Defender B2 shouldn't change this.

[Personally, I would NOT install this beta on all of the machines. Wait
till the final version is released.]

I'd test this.

I agree with PA Bear (both parts of his advice!)--this actually should work,
as I recall--at any rate, it should work in the same way as AutoUpdate on
these machines.

Yah, I thought it might. The only reason I questioned installing is if they
have no rights to install. My college does not allow any installing
whatsoever on public computers, even thoguh they require log-on,
username/pwd. There's no access to updates nor any type of installing. They
seem to have rights just above which makes me question...if the rights are
limited, there's the chance they might not be able to install it. Therefore,
I gave my thoughts on both sides so they can pick depending on the case. It's
the programmer in me. I must satisfy all cases.

In unmanaged networks, there's a scheme which works for limited users--I
don't think I understand it myself--perhaps they get a prompt to install
with RUNAS? This isn't going to work in your case--because not only do they
not know the admin credentials, there's no admin who's going to go around
typing them in.

You don't run WSUS?
