Automatic Update Restart Q

So everytime i log-on and my computer updates itself, there is a window that
pops up with the title Automatic Updates....and it says "Updating your
computer is almost complete. You must restart your computer for the updates
to take effect.

Do you want to restart your computer now?"

I click no, but later on it keeps popping up and it gets annoying!

Anyone have n e ideas?

Reboot. Many updates replace (or need to) files that are currently in use. This can only be done when they're not in use, so the updates will be "finished" as part of the reboot.

Microsoft's belief is that you risk screwing up your system if you don't
reboot right after the patch is installed. Rebooting will get rid of your
problem, and is inevitable anyways.

There is a registry value that will let you change this pop up to once a
day. This is is what I recommend:

Run regedit

In [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU]

Edit > New > DWORD:
"RebootRelaunchTimeoutEnabled" with a value of "1"

Edit > New > DWORD:
"RebootRelaunchTimeout" with a value of the time in minutes until the next
prompt. "1440" (24 hours) looks like the max.

Note that stopping the Automatic Updates service will stop those error
messages, until your next reboot. However, you wont' be reminded again to
reboot, meanwhile you are still vulnerable to hacking, viruses and other
system problems.

I think what he's saying is, he knows he needs to restart at some
point, but auto updates is on a timer which shows a lack of patience
when he's trying to get stuff done. Can we do anything to change or
remove the nag so that we can shutdown when we're ready?

Jon, my answer would be to go to Control Panel > Automatic Updates,
and change the setting to "Notify me but don't automatically download
or install them". This way you can choose to download, install, and
reboot all when it's convenient for you. You should be prepared to
reboot when asked, considering after all that you're starting the
process now.

General note, I just found one of my clients has a web server that was
mysteriously "going down" in the middle of the night and some comms
processes were interupted in the process. I just checked today and
saw Auto updates was set to download, install, and reboot at 3am.
We're adding a process to ensure all comms processes get reconnected
after such an event. Moral of the story is that it's not always such
a good thing when computers do stuff for us. :)
