Automatic update question

I'm using XP Home SP1. Just a few minutes ago, I turned on the
Automatic Update feature for the first time. I got tired of manually
checking. The program will notify me when there are updates to download.
Question: will Automatic Update only notify me of critical updates/patches?
For example, if I go to Windows Update now, it lists a video driver I can
download, but I'm not interested in that.

Yes - the automatic update will deal with critical and security patches, it
will not deal with additional components (.NET Framework, Movie Maker 2
etc ) or drivers.
These will download in the background and when available you will get a
popup to notify you - you can choose to install them then or later.

Thanks. Lets say I tell Microsoft Update to download the critical
files. After this is done, it may ask me to restart my computer. If I
click no, that won't hurt anything, will it? Sometimes a family member or
myself might be busy doing something and not want to immediately restart our
computer. We might want to wait hours before doing so. Is that okay?

You ideally should reboot a system as soon as an upgrade that requires one
is finished - in only a small number of cases will you seen any problem if
you delay the reboot until later.
