Automatic Update not working

I've had Automatic Update enabled for four months now. I
set it to download automatically and then prompt me for
installation. This worked fine till the end of July.
Since then, I haven't seen a single update. I didn't even
know that Service Pack 2 existed until early September,
when I happened to come across a reference to it. How do
I make my Automatic Update functional again?
