automatic update not available

The system control panel says that the automatic update
service is not available. I don't understand why not. I
think it used to work. Win XP Pro with SP1 on Dell 2GHz
Pentium 4, 512MB RAM. DSL behind router/firewall.

Until you get the automatic part fixed you can just go to
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
and click the 'scan for updates' button. Sometimes you
have to refresh this page to get the button to appear.
