My wife's machine had to have Windows XP Pro repaired from the original old
installation CDs, which seemed to work fine until Automatic Updates revealed
it needed 89 critical updates...all of which downloaded, none of which
installed after multiple frustrating tries.
On Discussion Group exchange someone advised running CHKDSK, which I did
with /f after a reboot...no joy.
Others have advised elaborate Registry changes that seem dangerous given I
am a novice and would need detailed step by step instructions.
This seems like a common issue, is there no common solution?
