Laptopn Dell Latitude, Windows 2000
Is it possible to program the computer to start at a specific time and
shutdown after let say 8 hours?

Since Windows is "dead" when the laptop is turned off,
it cannot start your laptop. The only thing that can turn
it on is its BIOS. Check your motherboard manual!

Now, how about stand by? If I put my laptop in standby, is it possible to
start it automatically?
 
Can you define this? What specifically needs to happen? Take a look at
Scheduled Tasks.

You need to check your BIOS.
Many newer BIOSes have the ability to power up the computer based on the
time-of-day clock.

Thanks for your information. Could you please give more hint where should I
look for info on BIOS regarding automatic start up of computer based on
computer internal clock?. I didn't thought this issue should be so difficult.
