is there any software that allows automatic shutdown when there is a
power failure, when power switched to batteries in UPS.

my ups did not come with any software of this kind. As i go off for
long hours while my comp is on..my ups is kinda getting discharged
every now and then...people tell me this is kinda bad for it.Batteries
might get spoiled a lot earlier than usual.

thx.

If the UPS does not have any kind of connection to the computer, there is
no way the computer can know that there is a power issue. Most mid level
and up UPS's have either a serial or a USB connection so the computer can
monitor what the UPS tells it and make decisions on what to do, some of
the high end ones also use Ethernet. I have an older APC that uses a
serial connection. If you can let me know who makes the UPS and if it has
a Serial or USB connection I will see what I can find out.

Usually if the ups can be monitored, it comes with a cable and
software. Check to see if the ups has a serial or usb connection, and
get the correct cable to hook it up to the pc. XP has some basic
monitoring software built in for some of the brands out there.

If the UPS has a USB connection to the computer, Windows will detect it as
a "HID" (Human Interface Device) and detect the battery. Then use the
Power Management applet in the Control Panel to set it to shutdown when the
battery gets low.

If the UPS has an RS232 Serial connection, you should be able to download
power management software from the UPS manufacturer.

Unless you have power problems in the house or the UPS is too small for the
computer, the battery should not be getting discharged. Radio Shack has
common batteries that will fit many UPS units if the battery is bad.
