Hi all,
New to all this, can any one help me
I am running XP sp2 and it restarts at any old time, then
tells me that my c has recovered fom a serious error..

Tried all 3 of the M/Soft suggested solutions, but
nothing seems to work, i have also tried Microsoft
AntiSpyware and it does nothing as well.
Can anybody suggest anything to help,
Thanks in advance
Brian

Hi there. Have you send the reports to MS? and if so, did
they offer you a link with the fix OR have you send your
reports to the Crash analyse site for tracking? If you do
not get a link with the fix, please track the reports, it
does help. O.k. it took for a problem on my PC more than
six months to recieve an answer, but MS found the cause of
my resets! It was Pinnacle Instant CD version 7. They also
had a link with a fix, but I'd already installed that fix
2 months earlier, so the fix did not work on MY pc, but I
removed Pinnacle(and replaced it with Cyberlink) and the
restarts were gone! In two other cases the links with
updates/patches from MS DID solve my PC problems! Have you
installed software recently that you can remove for a
while to see if the restarts disappear? It can take a long
while to find out why the computer keeps on resetting
itself. Jan vdn Eeden.

I would not expect Microsoft Antispyware to help with this issue, although I
can see why that might be a reasonable idea to have.

Do you have any recollection about when this issue started? What changes
might have been made to the machine, in terms of software or hardware added,
or drivers changed or updated, around that time?

Hi and thanks for your reply, yesi have sent several
reports to MS, but they have offered no help at all, they
must think that their fix [ id 894278 ] will fix, but it
won't go all the actions they suggest, so today i have been
uninstalling a lot of programs until i will only have the
basic XP running, and i see what happens from there.
Actually it has lasted a lot longer today, before
restarting, so its a game of trial and error it seems.
Thanks for your reply

Hi and thanks for your interest as well, i really can;t
recall what differant actions i took before this started,
but today i am uninstalling all my programs until i have
only the XP windows running, also i will be searching
through all files before this happened about 4 days ago.
Its a game of trial and error, i will get really stuck into
it tonight and see if i can find the trouble, thanks for
your reply

Brian,

Something I have run across time and time again troubleshooting PCs is a
faulty memory module that sends people on year-long wild goose chases
uninstalling a variety of software which might make it happen slightly less
often because it might take longer to access the faulty memory address.

There are a number of tools available, one even from Microsoft, that will
test your PCs memory. The Microsoft memory diagnostic tool can be
downloaded for free from http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

If your memory comes up clean, then at least you can continue your other
endeavors knowing that it's *not* your memory at fault (if it comes up clean
after the basic test, I would recommend running the thorough test which you
can leave running overnight, just to be sure). Otherwise, if it is your
memory that is faulty, you will need to go through the somewhat painful task
of figuring out which module it is by a process of elimination (especially
painful where your RAM type dictates that you use modules in matching
pairs). This process is described fairly well in the user guide on the same
page above. If your computer is under warranty, you probably will want to
let the warrantor do the troubleshooting as it will require opening up your
PC and doing some "surgery".

Good luck,
Jason

Excellent thought--and a great tool that is not too well known.

The other tool I'd suggest for this troubleshooting process is
MSCONFIG--much easier than uninstalling and reinstalling programs.

Hi Jason,
I have a memory tester, i will test them, strangely enough
you mention that, i had trouble a couple of months back and
replaced 2 new ones and it fixed my problem back then.
It will be well worth the effort to test again.
Thanks

Ok thanks for your tip, i will try that as well, trouble is
right now i have not got much time to work on the PC, but
soon as i can i will try both of your good advise.
Many thanks
Brian S.

A bugcheck can be caused by a lot of things... hardware...software...
malware :) ... you may want to give PSS a call so we can look at the memory
dump and debug it. This may be the fastest way to get the answer as to what
is causing the issue.
