Under the scan settings, should I always have the automatic removal of
spayware constantly on during a scan. Is this the best solution or not, I
haven't had WD very long and I am still learning. So far every scan which is
carried out daily has not shown if I have had any spyware or not, I don't
know. After scanning message just says computer running normally, but I
don't know if there has been any unwanted spayware or indeed anything else.
Can anyone advise on the best settings.

The Help for Windows Defender recommends a daily quick scan. I think the
Microsoft people recommend a full scan every 10 days (Microsoft please
correct me if I am wrong). The full scan may interfere with your online
activities, so I would say schedule the full scan when you are not using your
computer. Currently under automatic scanning, I would not check the box that
says apply default actions. That way after the scan, you can determine what
action to take. You don't have to be at your computer immediately after the
scan - Windows Defender will wait for you.

Forgot to say: If you suspect that your computer has been infected by some
malware, then you would want to run a full scan as soon as possible. Under
these conditions, it would also be advisable to also run scans using other
anti-malware/spyware programs (many can be downloaded from the Internet and
have free versions) - Ewido is a good one. Everyone has their favorites. In
addition to Windows Defender, I use Ewido, Spybot S&D, Lavasoft Ad-aware,
a-squared, and XoftSpy.

Thank you Mr Cat for your comments. I will alter my settings as I do have a
full scan every day, but you do not think this is necessary. Its interesting
to learn that you have quite a few syware programs running, a question I
would like to ask is do they not conflict with one another, or indeed do they
slow the progress of your computer running.

The known-issues for Windows Defender don't mention conflicts with other
antispyware or antivirus apps, except perhaps at install time. The more
real-time protection apps you have running, the more system load and
possible interactions--multiple alerts for the same issue, etc, you might
see. It is probably better to minimize the number of apps providing
real-time protection.

Mr Sanderson is correct. I do not use the real time components of these
products. Occasionally I run full scans utilizing all the products to ensure
my system is clean.

Thanks for your comments. I will look on the net for Ewido and maybe Spybot.
My real time is running on Defender though you say just have one running at
one time.
