Willy,
Right click My Computer on the desktop. Click the Automatic Update
tab. Put a mark next to " Turn off Automatic Updates "
Click Apply, then OK.
Restart the system.
Go to Start, Run, and type in services.msc
Click OK.
Double click Automatic Updates. It must be set to Automatic for
Startup type: If it is not, do so, click Apply, then OK.
Double click Background Intelligent Transfer Service. BITS can be
set to either Manual or Automatic for Startup type:
Close the Services Console.
Right click My Computer on the desktop. Reenable Automatic Updates
to the setting that you prefer. Click Apply, then OK.
Restart the system to see if the setting sticks now.
IF IT DOES NOT, strongly suggest that you scan the system for the
presence of malware that *may* be preventing the Automatic Update
service from being run.
Does Windows XP SP2 show in Add/Remove Programs in the
Control Panel ?
