scanner detection problems

I have a very expensive scanner and I cannot afford to
replace it. I recently bought a new system with windows
xp. I loaded the drivers for the scanner and the scanner
does work. However, windows continually attempts to
automatically detect the scanner and load drivers. The
drivers that I have which are the latest for this scanner
do not seem to be completely compatible with XP. The
scanner works but I cannot get rid of the message and
keep having to cancel installation by xp. IS THERE A WAY
TO TURN AUTOMATIC HARDWARE DETECTION OFF?

Are you saying that the Hardware Installation Wizard comes up each time you
reboot?
If yes, what is the exact wording in the dialog box?

Hi, SDP.

What is the make and model of your scanner? And what interface does it use?
(USB? Parallel? Serial?) If you tell us this, someone here will probably
recognize it and give you some guidance.

Have you been to the scanner maker's website? Look for Tech Support for
WinXP and your specific model. Many sites have excellent FAQs and other
tips for installing their hardware. Some manufacturers insist that their
drivers be installed BEFORE the hardware is plugged in; you might need to
unplug your scanner, uninstall your drivers, reboot and start over. No
matter how "late" your drivers are, those for Win9x/ME almost certainly
won't work with WinXP. The maker's website should tell you all these
things.
