I'm running W-2000/pro, Outlook Express. I have a faint
memory of there being a place to set the number of days a
newsgroup message appears, and thereafter if deletes itself.
I think I originally set it for 7 days or 10 days. Now I
want to change it and I cannot find the place/method. Can
anyone here refresh my memory? Thanks.

You probably created a rule something like;

Apply this rule after the message arrives
Where the message was sent more than 30 days ago
Delete it
and Stop processing more rules

If not ask them here;

Sorry I posted it to the wrong group. I later posted it to
the OE/IE newsgroup, and the same suggestion
(tools|options|maintenance) was made there. Unfortunately
that option is faded and not available to me unless I agree
to "compact files in background" which seems to be widely
recommended against. Thanks for your assistance.

Are you starting up with the /news switch?

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /news

I don't think so, but I'm sufficiently ignorant that I don't
know how to find out. My computer seems to start the same
way it has for years. Power on, then I click on the icon to
log onto my ISP, then when that process is completed I click
on the icon to open OE. Maybe I don't understand your
question. Thanks.

ADD the /news switch to the shortcut's "Target" that you use to start OE
with in news mode.

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /news
