have 2 computers, one running XP Pro and one running 2000.
on both when deleting or copying files, copies are automatically created.
How can I turn this function off? how did it get turned on?

1) *How* are you copying/deleting these files?
2) Wouldn't you *expect* a copy of these files when you are... copying these
files?

I go to my floppy drive for example to copy files to the hard drive. While
holding down the Ctrl key, I click on each file to be transferred. Then I go
to "Edit" and click on copy. Then I go to the destination drive and click on
"Paste. The file(s) is copied and 2 or 3 copies of the copy are created.

Same thing when deleting files. When you hit the "del" key, the files being
deleted are backed up in the same place they were just deleted from.
sometimes 2 or 3 copies.

I can't find any place in the help files how to turn this off. I never
turned it on. It is very frustrating when trying to clean up unwanted files.

You didn't "turn on" anything. This is not a feature of Windows I know of.
Something else is going on with your system. Check for viruses,
adware/spware, etc.

when you hold down control and click on the file ensure that the mouse cursor
does not move, release the control before moving to the next file, if you
move the cursor across as you hold down the control the files will
automatically be copied. i only discovered this after finding literally
hundreds of copied pictures.
good luck.
