I've installed Windows XP Professional on my computer as a clean install.
Version 5.1 (build 2600xpsp2.030422-1633: Service Pack 1)
I have it networked with a computer running Windows 98 which shares its
printer and drives. My Internet connection is by 56K modem.

In looking at my network places I discovered several of my websites that I
publish to using FrontPage. I deleted those so there are no online locations
referenced in my network places.

Within the last few days I've run into an annoyance. Even if I am using no
Internet-related applications Windows is dialing my modem and essentially
won't give up. I cancel the call when I catch it unless I want to be online.
I do not want to be online all the time. How can I get rid of this new habit
of automatically connecting?

In the network connection properties (I think this is where it is) there is
a check box that says something like "dial out when a network connection is
not present." The same thing has happening with mine.

Thank you. I found the settings you suggested and we'll see if that does the
trick. So many places to look!

I found one of the related places. In XP, in the properties for the dialup
connection (and I assume that it would be about the same for a cable network
connection) to the internet, under Properties, Advanced, Internet Connection
Sharing the checkbox is

[x] Establish a dial-up connection whenever a computer on my network
attempts to access the internet.

This is on the ICS host computer.

I expect this will make the host dial out when a ICS client makes a network
request.

There are some other related settings under Internet Options in IE. "Dial
whenever a network connection is not present" This is the one that will dial
out when the ICS client computer does not have a network connection (as when
my wifi card on the host computer is off, very annoying).

In case anyone else is puzzled by this.
