Automatic completion of invalid e-mail addresses

Automatic completion of e-mail names keeps old addresses that I have deleted from my Contacts list. I can delete these no-longer-valid appearances from the drop down for a specific e-mail message that I am composing, but they consistently reappear the next time I start to address an e-mail to this individual. How do I permanently delete them?
