I have noticed that occassionly, without rhyme or recognizeable reason, my
automatic calculation gets switched over to manual. Is this a bug? virus?
undocumented feature?

Excel picks up this setting from the first workbook you open in that session.

So if you're unlucky enough to open a (common???) workbook that someone saved
with manual calculation, you could be toggling that setting often.

(And if you open a workbook that has calculation set to automatic first, then
you'll get autocalc until you change it.)

Strange as it may seem, XL chooses to adjust this setting to *whatever* the
setting is for the *first* WB opened in a session of XL, no matter what
setting might have been saved in the WB.

HOWEVER, if you open a *single* WB, no matter what the calc settings, work
on it, save it, and close it, and *then* open another *single* WB that had
different calc settings, this second WB should retain it's *original* calc
settings.

***The problem gets complicated when multiple WBs are opened
concurrently.***

In fact, even the Personnel.xls WB can be changed with this "anomaly".

When you have WBs that have different calc settings, this can be a PITA,
unless you know "which is what", and open the proper one first.

Well, that seems to be quite the oversight on Bill's part.
Maybe he'll fix it in an office patch, or in Office 2005? Anyway, I'm glad
to know I wasn't crazy. Just getting driven there by our friends in
Redmond.
