Can anyone help a technophobe regarding auto back up? I have started it and
am now on disc 7! The blurb says that it does not include program files in
the back up but on looking at the screen it looks like it is doing exactly
that! Have I done something wrong?

Any ideas would be gratefully received.

And - what backup utility are you using ? Vista's File Backup? Using CDs or
DVDs? Did you "select" the file/data to bve baked up? Or did you use the
"default" Vista selections? Size of your HD(s)?

If using CDs, seven only would represent 1.5. gigs zipped files - default
file/data selection generally much more - much more.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

Am using Vista Home Premium Auto Back Up, with 700mb cds, and I used the
default selections. Don't know size of HD, but I know it is a dual core if
that is any use.

Choccielover -- When I first got my Vista computer, I tried using CD's as
the automatic backup destination, but it was taking more than 12 CD's and a
big hassle; then I tried DVD's and it was taking multiple discs, still
taking a long time and lots of attention to the DVD writing. I then bought
myself a $60 external USB 160 GB hard drive for my backups; now it works
truly automatically and hassle free.

Hello, my problem is with the external hard drive. I have bought a 320 gb
external hard drive for my weekly automatic backups, but it seems that all of
the backups are stored individually in the hard drive for a long time, so the
available space is about to be finished very soon.

Will the backup program delete the oldest backup file and continue, or will
I have to do something about that?

I have changed some settings after starting the oldest backup profiles (for
example, I have not included movies, etc), so does it has to do anything with
this problem?

As a last word, my external hard drive has a FAT32 format instead of the
NTFS.

Thank you for your replies.

Many "advanced" backup programs have a setting to automatically clean out
old backups according to parameters that YOU select.

Windows Backup just keeps adding to what is already there if I remember
correctly. I only tested the supplied backup program - I have never actively
used it. I use TrueImage HOME 11.0 for all by backups, both system and
Documents, email etc.

In addition to my original archived system backup, I keep two complete
weekly sets. Earlier backups are deleted automatically.

I have a similar situation and what I am doing is daily backups of
everything and then periodically ( as in when the external drive starts to
fill up) I start with a new full backup and erase the old one. I found an
excellent backup software product called Acronis True Image which will do a
complete backup and then incremental backups as you schedule. I the event
your PC crashes and your HD is gone and must be replaced this is the way to
go. All that is required to get back running is a new drive and a reload
from this software. There are many other products out their that can also do
the same thing so you must look around and see what fits your needs.

Good luck.

Why won't True Image use "dynamic disks" then?

I have only SATA drives and x64 Business and Home Premium.

The disks were formatted GPL/GUID.

New Vista user.
