Hi,

Does anyone know why Automated scanning doesn't scan despite its selection
in tools/options?

Thanks

Having the same problem. The only time it runs is after I get the message
that it hasn't run in 3 days and I tell it to run manually. It's set up to
run at 11:00 AM daily but never runs automatically.

I need more information here - What OS are you running? Is the task
scheduler service started?

The OS is Windows XP Professional SP2 running all the latest Microsoft
updates. The Task Scheduler is started but there is no entry for Windows
Defender in it.

Reading other threads I found that Task Scheduler has 'Hidden' tasks.
Looking at them Windows defender is in there scheduled to run daily at the
specified time. Needless to say, it does not run.

I looked at the history log for Windows Defender and saw none indiciator of
any problems. The only entries were for my Outlook Spam detector and my
'Allow' and 'Succeeded'.

In the task scheduler window, go to Advanced, in the top menus. and check
"View hidden tasks."

You should then see a job for the Defender scan. "MP Scheduled scan."

What build of Windows Defender are you on--top number in help, about?

What's the scheduled time/date of that job? If you right-click it and tell
it to run, what happens?

I found it in 'Hidden'. Did not scan though. I changed it to 1:00PM. Still
didn't scan. Task Scheduler indicated the change. Task Scheduler says it ran

There are several places where logs should show what really went on. In the
Scheduled Tasks folder, there's a log file which should show whether the
task started, and the duration--advanced, view log.

Additionally, and with better information, there's the system event log,
filtered for events with source "Windefend."

Right click My Computer, choose manage, click on the + in front of event
viewer, highlight the SYSTEM log, choose view, filter, and "WinDefend" in
the source drop-down control.

There should be events for start and end of each scheduled scan--and it will
have more detail than the scheduled tasks log has.

Just for clarification--you won't see anything happen on a scheduled scan,
unless you open the Windows Defender UI while the scan is in progress, and
let it stay open for a bit, so it can connect to the process that is
actually doing the scan and display the progress.

So--it isn't clear to me whether the scan is really not happening, or
whether it might be happening, but that there is a problem updating the UI
to show the last scan date correctly.

Hi,

I set Windows Defender to run Daily at 2:00PM. At 2:00PM I monitored both
the Scheduled Task window and Windows Defender Window. At 2:00PM Scheduled
Task showed the Windows Defender entry as 'running'. This lasted only a few
seconds. It then showed Last Run Time as 2:00 PM. At the same time I was
watching the Windows Defender window and there was no activity at all there.
After 2 minutes I manually initiated a Scan. This scan ran for 2:14 and
scanned 30553 objects.

Looking at the Scheduled Task Log there was a Windows Defender Start and
Stop entry:
"MP Scheduled Scan.job" (MpCmdRun.exe)
Started 5/16/2006 2:00:00 PM
"Cloudmark Desktop Config Guard.job" (snoe.exe)
Finished 5/16/2006 2:00:00 PM
Result: The task completed with an exit code of (0).
"MP Scheduled Scan.job" (MpCmdRun.exe)
Finished 5/16/2006 2:00:06 PM

The System Event Log shows for WinDefend shows:
Information 5/16/2006 2:04:42 PM WinDefend None 1001 N/A RX860
Information 5/16/2006 2:02:28 PM WinDefend None 1000 N/A RX860
(The only 2:00 PM timeframe entries)

After running the Scan manually the Windows Defender window shows Last Scan
Today at 2:02 PM

Looking at my previous update: Scheduled Tasks kicked off Windows Defender
task at 2:00 PM as it should have. Windows Defender never ran. At 2:02 PM
I started a Windows Defender Scan that lasted 2 minutes and 14 seconds. The
Windows Defender window then indicated the completion of the scan that I
started.

Hopefully this (this reply and my previous reply) will help determine what
happened and lead to what is happening with the scheduled scan not occuring.

Additional Information: I copied the Scheduled Task entry for Windows

monitor it running in the Windows Defender window.

The run command was:

Scheduled Task kicked Windows Defender off at 4:00 PM but Windows Defender

check my Firewall (Microsoft OneCare Protection Plus) and Windows Defender
was defined and 'Allow'ed.

One culpret that others have fingered is the switch syntax on the command
line, when the host OS is Windows 2000.

However- since you were able to run the unmodified command interactively and
get an effective scan, I think the most likely issue with the scheduled scan
is the credentials under which it is running.

On my system, if I make the hidden task visible, and right click it and
choose properties, looking at the Task tab, the Run as: is set to NT
AUTHORITY/SYSTEM

If yours does not read that way, try changing it. If it does, consider
setting that to an administrator level user with a password on your system,
and set the password for that user, using the set password button.

It is also possible that changing these credentials and then re-setting them
to NT AUTHORITY/SYSTEM may make a difference--there have been some other
posts in relation to credentials which suggest that it won't hurt to try
that, at any rate.

Hi,

Does anyone know why Automated scanning doesn't scan despite
its
selection
in tools/options?

Thanks

Yes, it was set to NT AUTHORITY/SYSTEM. I changed it to my USER and set it
to 'Run Only if Logged On' and it ran OK. I tried changing it back to NT
AUTHORITY/SYSTEM and still had the same problem. Running fine now with my
USER specified.

I don't know if this is the same for the originator of this thread (Arno
D.S.). I jumped on this thread because I was having the same problem.

Looking at my previous update: Scheduled Tasks kicked off Windows

Just for clarification--you won't see anything happen on a scheduled
scan,
unless you open the Windows Defender UI while the scan is in
progress, and
let it stay open for a bit, so it can connect to the process that is
actually doing the scan and display the progress.

So--it isn't clear to me whether the scan is really not happening, or

Well--as a workaround, you can pull it out from under Windows Defender and
just schedule that command yourself with the parameters you choose, and tell
Defender not to schedule it at all. That should work, and allows you some
flexibility--but requires effort.
