Automated record numbering

I would like to have a field that displays a record number, incremented automatically by 1 each time a new record is added

(Background: this is for a project "issues list" and for ease of reference, I'd like to be able to refer to "Issue number #" for both clarity and convenience, instead of fumbling through descriptions each time.

I am using a task form and so each time a new task (issue) is created, this field will increment by 1

Any help is much appreciated
