Automated list of references

I am writing a long thesis, with many references. I list references with superscript numbers in the text and a regular number in my reference list. Is it possible to do something so the numbers will change automatically i.e. if I add a new reference before my reference 22, so I don’t have to manually change all the numbers

Martin,

You want to use Endnotes. Insert>Reference>Footnotes and then select the
endnote radio button. You will need to format the numbers to your desired
style. When Word inserts the Endnote number at the end of the document, the
number will be is superscript. When you are finished, you can select each
number and remove the superscript attribute.

When I make an end note, is it then possible to refer it to the same reference at the end? i.e. when I refer to the same article more than once, I want the number to be the same for all the references in the text.

You can use cross-references. In Word 2002 it's Insert >
Reference > Cross-Reference (in earlier releases it's
Insert > Reference); choose "Endnote" as the type of
reference, and then select the desired item.

As Stefan mentioned, you can cross reference back to the original endnote to
mark mutliple text with the same number. A few points to overcome: 1) the
cross reference number will be in normal text which you will need format as
superscript to match your endnote markers. 2) the cross reference markers
will not update until you update fields in the document.
 
If you insert the cross-reference as "Endnote number (formatted)," it will
be superscript.

For a reference list, however, I would not use endnotes. I'd use an ordinary
numbered list with text references inserted as cross-references to "Numbered
item," in which case you do have to apply the superscript property (or
Endnote Reference style).
