I just got a lap top with Windows XP and every so often
the help sreen for whatever program I am working on comes
up. I did not press any buttons (i.e. Shift key or left
mouse button) to cause this and I'm not sure what setting
(if any) I can change to disable this "automated help"..
it's distracting! thanks

Liz,

Please indicate the name of such a program and describe, in detail, "the help sreen" that you see.

hi Jan, well that's what's weird, if I'm in explorer, the
help screen for explorer comes up. if i'm in quicken or
word perfect, or whatever, the help for THAT program
comes up. The help screen is the one for whatever
program I am working on... so it's got to be some
universal call for help that is automatically being sent
out. i'm not pressing any button to bring this on...

Hi Liz,

Pressing the [F1] key on the keyboard will bring up the "Help screen" for many applications.

One possibility is that your keyboard is defective in relation to that key.

While no application programs are open, gently press the [F1] key to determine if it is stuck, or if it feels different from the
other [F??] keys.

Does the issue occur whilst logged into another account?
