We have 500 XP machines in our domain. We would like to schedule the
shutdown and startup of the computer at specific times. Is there a way to
automatically startup an XP machine after it has been shutdown like there is
in a Mac environment? For example, we would like to shut dowmn the computers
at 5PM and start them up at 7 AM. Any help is appreciated

That's going to stuff the Finance Dept at month, quarter and year end
then, isn't it?

If the PCs have Wake On Lan Network Cards, it should be possible. Check to
see if they have WOL NIC Cards (usually enabled and disabled in the System
BIOS) and go to the card or PC manufacturer's website to see how to do it.
