I am looking for others using MS Access 2003 and Autodesk Revit together to
build cost estimating databases for Building Construction. We would like to
trade information and experiences to get the most out of this capability.

John Brunt,
Faculty, BYU-Idaho

I have yet to combine them...still trying to figure out how we might want to
view/control the extensive amount of data. In the future, I'm looking to
bring ms access information and revit model information and ms project
information together for office tracking and scheduling purposes. The Revit
newsgroup or CAD managers newsgroup will be flooded with these kinds of
questions in the not too distant future.

Thank you for the reply - I usually do not even get that much. Your placing
it "In the future" but "not too distant future" was encouraging.

We have started some students developing the tools to do takes offs of
certain groups of items and want to get to the point that there is a back
check that ensures that all model items are accounted for. It make take some
time. It will definitly be just a part of a complete estimate for a wile.

How are you using your data in Access. Is there anything we can share with
you to help you keep rolling?

High regards,
Brunt

Its quite exciting to hear that you are getting into data extraction.
Unfortunately I have not ventured into testing anything just yet (I'm just
getting started with revit software and the implementation in our office).

I have read a few articles about architectural firms (no specific firms)
actually leasing access to their model online to extract exactly the
information you are talking about - how much brick do I need to order/price?
How much gyp. do I need? etc. The other part that I'm interested in, but not
sure how/if data extraction would help, is digital fabrication where the
architects design model is sent directly to the fabricator and delivered on
site for assembly (huge liability, but good potential to gain additional fees
from the architects side if you're willing to accept the responsibility.)
Sharples Holden Pasquerelli (SHoP) in New York does this quite successfully.

Because I have not ventured into this just yet, I'd be interested in how
you've setup your ms access database (tables, relationships, etc.) and how
you translate/extract the data. Is the extraction done once (and re-done
after a change is made) or does it maintain a dynamic relationship with the
revit file?

My current ms access database generates general project/office information
(project type, location, phase, department, transmittals, RFI's, and shop
drawing tracking). Its a simplified version of the archioffice software.

Revit Drawing Manager/Automatic Transmittals

Have any of you seen the Revit Drawing Manager on this site

www.revittv.com

I've been using it for a while now and i find it a huge relief to the traditional approach to managing sheets/drawing in Revit...
