I posted not too long ago about automating defrag and
chkdsk and got some good tips on the former and
information on why the latter isn't really possible in the
way I was aiming.

I downloaded autodefrag and tried just running it from the
command line myself, and it kicked off the disk defrag
just fine. However, we tried setting up a job using the
Windows Task Scheduler, and having the job kick off while
a workstation was sitting at our Novell login screen. The
job attempted to take off, and we heard the PC Speaker
beep...when we logged in disk defrag was resident, but it
timed out and didn't do anything. We didn't see any
specific errors in the event viewer or in the scheduler
log as to what defrag spat out when we heard the beep.

We're going to be doing a little more work with it, but I
was wondering if this is something that potentially can't
be done on a Novell network for some reason. We filled
out the appropriate login information in the scheduled
task. FYI, the workstations are Win2K Pro SP3 and we're
using Netware 6 with fairly new clients. If you have any
info or ideas how to get it working, let me know. Thanks!

Phil,

All AutoDefrag is doing is launching the built-in defragmenter (GUI) and
passing the appropriate keystrokes to simulate a user selecting which drive
to defragment and then waiting for the built-in defragmenter to run, finish,
and display the completed message.

I suspect that AutoDefrag isn't sending the correct keystrokes - evidenced
by nothing actually happening but actually had launched.

You might contact the developer of AutoDefrag and see if they have any
suggestions.
