Autocorrect will not save file in Word 2007

I keep receiving a message saying "Your Autocorrect file could not be saved.
It is either a ready only or you do not have permission to modify the file."

So.... therefore, after trying to work around this, autocorrect entries work
only while I have Word open and when I close it and try to use those entries
again, they do not work, nor are they there.

any help would be appreciated.

Did you check to see if your AutoCorrect file was read-only or check
permissions for it? Go to Start/Run and type: %AppData% to open your
Application Data folder. Then navigate to \Microsoft\Office and check your
*.acl files.

If you are using English the file name is: MSO1033.acl

Louise - did you solve this problem eventually? I have got the same message
- it mentions MSO3081.acl. I have used Beth's advice to navigate to the
file, but it is not clicked read-only and all the permissions seem to be OK.
Everytime I hit space bar or tab or any unusual symbol, this error message
comes up.
 
Did you try creating a new profile?

Before you re-import it, find and rename the ACL file that holds the
unformatted
entries. If I can assume from your handle that you're using the Australian
English language setting, then the proper file will be named MSO3081.ACL,
in a folder whose location is described in the article. Then rename
Normal.dot
(or whatever other template contains your autocorrects), restart Word, and
reload the exported entries. If that solves the problem, use the Organizer
to copy over any other customizations from the old Normal.dot.

The solution, of course, is to restore the user's write permissions. A
legible error message would've saved me a lot of time tracking this
problem down. :-)

A quote from 2003 issues and 2000 issues:


"I think I've found a bug, or at least a Very Cryptic Error Message
(TM), in Microsoft Office 2003.

Scenario: for whatever reason, the current user does not have write
permissions for the AutoCorrect file "%USERPROFILE%\Application
Data\Microsoft\Office\MSO1033.acl". (Or substitute your own locale ID
if it's not 1033, U.S.)

Then that user attempts to add, update, or delete an AutoCorrect entry
in any Office application that uses the AutoCorrect module (e.g., Word
and Excel.)

A very cryptic Unicode error message results. On one test machine, the
error message was several rows of boxes. On another (with better
Unicode support, I guess,) most of the boxes were replaced with
Kanji-looking characters. I'm not sure if it was Japanese, Chinese,
Korean, or what.

Thank you for your patience, Summer. Yes, I have just created a new user
account, transferred one of the problem documents over and opened it and the
problem does seem to have gone away. Keep your fingers crossed.

FYI, the full error message is: Your Autocorrect file
C/users/..../AppData/Roaming/Microsoft/office/MSO3081.acl could not be saved.
The file may be read-only, or you may not have permission to modify the file.
 
There is an answer to this problem . You must bold what you want to use in
your autocorrect, then use Alt F3. You will get a box that comes up. Use
the drop down box and change quick parts to autotext. AFter that rename your
autocorrect name to what ever you want it. then click okay. Then, when you
want to use that autocorrect entry type the quickword for it and click F3.
They no longer allow you to just use abbreviations without using the F3 key
because there were a lot fo complaints about random words ending up in
documents that made no sense. Hope this helps. It was wonderful to find
this out.

Louise, I'm afraid you've gotten some misinformation there.

When you use Alt+F3 to store an entry, you're changing it from an
AutoCorrect entry to an AutoText entry. Those are two similar but
different features of Word, and they're stored in different places.

AutoCorrect still does replacements immediately as you type the entry
in the document. For example, 'teh' is instantly replaced by 'the'
because it's an AutoCorrect entry. You can still store entries from
the right-click menu when you correct a misspelling, or through the
Word Options dialog.

AutoText in versions before Word 2007 would prompt you to press Enter
(or Tab) to replace an entry, although you could always press F3. The
prompting is what was removed for Word 2007, and the reason has
nothing to do with 'random' replacements -- it's because AutoText was
made part of the new Building Blocks feature, and MS was of the (IMHO
incorrect) opinion that they couldn't provide automatic prompting for
AutoText without getting tangled up in the other parts of Building
Blocks (such as cover pages).

Your registry may have been corrupted

For me it was a registry problem that prevented my .acl files from saving, and therefore Outlook from syncing with my pop3 account. Recommend anyone having this problem go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886549#FixItForMeAlways to review steps to fix their registry. Specifically for me, since I have Win7, my Value Data changed from %USERPROFILE% (which means whichever user is currently logged in) to the name of specific user profile %USERNAMEXYZ%. Here's the steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type Regedit.exe, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
  3. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
  4. In the right pane, verify that the values are the same as the values in the following table. If each value matches the table, go to step 7.
Value name|Type|Value data

AppData|REG_EXPAND_SZ|%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming

5. If any Name, Type, or Value does not match the table in step 3, right-click the Value name, and then click Delete.
6. In the left pane, right-click User Shell Folders, point to New, click Expandable String Value, type the Name value that you want from the table in step 3, and then press ENTER.
7. Right-click the value that you created in step 5, click Modify, type the value in the Value data box for the Value name, and then click OK.
8. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
